Acrylic Floral Painting Step by Step Process – A Vase of Flowers on Canvas
Acrylic floral painting of pink and blue flowers arranged in a rounded ceramic vase on a muted blue-grey background.

Every painting begins with a background.
This acrylic artwork started on a 30 × 40 cm canvas, gradually filled with color between moments spent at the craft studio and time away. The first layers focused on shaping the basic idea: a table, a simple vase, and loose green brushstrokes hinting at foliage and movement.

As the composition developed, details were added slowly and intuitively, whether during daylight or late hours. An open doorway emerged in the background, revealing a softly lit interior that adds depth and atmosphere to the scene.

Additional greens were layered in, defining the outline of leaves and helping the color palette settle into a balanced, cohesive whole. At every stage, hues and tones were adjusted to maintain harmony across the canvas.

Before painting the flowers, we need to decide on the colour palette to match the rest of the painting’s elements. Here’s the palette I’ve chosen for this acrylic vase with flowers.

Colour Palette used

Combining palette colours with basic hues, along with black and white, provides a wide range of colour options.

With the structure in place, attention turned to the flowers. Pale pink tones were used to build the main blooms, adding gentle highlights and soft transitions between light and shadow.

Small blue flowers were scattered throughout the arrangement, introducing contrast and rhythm. Titanium white was then applied selectively to outline and refine details, enhancing clarity without overpowering the softness of the forms.

Against a burnt amber background, tiny dots of ochre, black, and white formed the flower centers and stems. Thin lines defined the pink petals, while lighter green and white traced the leaves, adding texture and movement. Soft blends of blue and white created a delicate, almost lace-like effect for the smaller flowers.

Yellow ochre was introduced to warm the leaves with subtle golden tones. Diluted acrylics and water were used on the petals to soften edges and deepen the sense of depth. Throughout the final stages, areas were gently lightened or darkened, with thinned paint applied where needed to adjust contrast. A light fogging effect in soft blue shades completed the background, adding a quiet, atmospheric finish.

The painting is now complete: a vase with flowers, created in a vintage, rustic color palette, calm in mood and rich in layered detail.
